Superbad director Greg Mottola writes and calls the shots on this comedy with dramatic ambitions. Set against the backdrop of a seedy amusement park, this ‘80s homage centres on James (Jesse Eisenberg), a nice college grad who has yet to lose his virginity. When he gets a job at the local fun park and meets Em (Kristen Stewart), he’s hopeful his romantic fate will change — but things don’t turn out as planned, for James, or the audience. A largely familiar mix of virgin angst, the movie doesn’t do much to reinvent the material, but the performers find enough traction to pull the movie home.

Starring: Kristen Stewart, Jesse Eisenberg, Ryan Reynolds, Kristen Wiig and Bill Hader

Rating: Three stars out of five

They promise blissful distraction, but amusement parks can seem like depressing monuments to human failure. • Read full story…

Written and directed by Greg Mottola, the same guy who brought the successful but raunchy comedy “Superbad” to the box-office, “Adventureland” is a surprisingly thoughtful and compelling coming-of-age film that’s more of an examination of angst-ridden romance and the need for financial and emotional independence than it is an exercise in vulgarity.

Mottola manages to offer a simple storyline, injected with genuine dialogue delivered by quirky but engaging characters. • Read full story…

When Kristen Stewart was making Adventureland, she was just another young actress whom most people had never heard of. Then Twilight came out and changed all of that.

In that creepy romantic tale, based on a popular teen novel, she plays a high school student who falls truly, madly, deeply in love with a vampire. The movie grossed more than $370 million worldwide and propelled her to stardom. Stewart now finds herself on the cover of teen magazines answering questions about whether she’s romantically involved with Twilight co-star Robert Pattinson (they’re just friends, she insists; her actual beau is actor Michael Angarano) and her style of dressing (“I’ve always had an aversion to looking sexy — it’s gross, you know,” she tells Nylon). • Read full story…

Greg Mottola’s Superbad was a massive hit, grossing well over $100 million domestically on a relatively modest $20 million budget. It hilariously portrayed the alcohol-, drug-, and sex-driven adventures of a group of high schoolers (and a few cops), but its emotional core was unmistakable: The sweet friendship between Seth (Jonah Hill) and Evan (Michael Cera) was what held the film together. Now for his follow-up, Adventureland, Mottola is working off his own script, and has focused his gaze in a slightly different direction: post-adolescent romance. But with fewer dick jokes and more post-college angst, does Adventureland deliver the laughs and/or the emotion that we’ve come to expect?

In summer 1987, James Brennan (Jesse Eisenberg) has just graduated from college and is looking forward to a tour of Europe and a bright future at the Columbia Journalism School. Unfortunately, due to some unfortunate occupational changes, his parents (Wendie Malick and Jack Gilpin) find themselves unable to pay for his trip. James is thus forced to take a low-paying job at the local amusement park, Adventureland. While he initially balks at the idea, the colorful characters he meets there, and the co-worker he falls in love with, Em (Kristen Stewart), promise to make it one of the most memorable summers he’s ever had. • Read full story…

According to “Superbad” writer/director Greg Mottola, he designed his follow-up film “Adventureland” with the hope that it would play like a great pop song. His stars say they can see the comparison.

“It’s very emotional,” Kristen Stewart said. “It’s got a thumping heartbeat at the core of it, and it’s got rhythm.”

“And the movie is only three minutes long,” co-star Jesse Eisenberg teased. • Read full story…

Greg Mottola never had any ambitions of becoming John Hughes’s heir apparent, but Superbad happened and that changed everything for the Long Island-raised filmmaker.

The low-budget 2007 comedy about two losers on a near-quixotic quest for booze and female attention raked in $121 million on a $20 million production budget, placing Mottola on the teen comedy throne.

“I really come from an independent film background. I love ’70s films and European movies,” says Mottola, distancing himself from the Hughes mantel from the moment he opens his mouth. • Read full story…

‘Twilight’ star Kristen Stewart creates sparks with ‘The Squid and the Whale’ star Jesse Eisenberg in the retro-summer comedy ‘Adventureland’ — and we’ve got an exclusive sneak peek!

In theaters everywhere April 3, ‘Adventureland’ takes place in the summer of 1987. Jesse plays an uptight recent college grad looking to escape on his dream tour of Europe. But when his parents (Wendie Malick and Jack Gilpin) break the news that they can’t afford to pay for his trip, he’s forced to pick up a job at the local amusement park, Adventureland. • Read full story…

Kristen Stewart has, yet again, become the subject of cruel scrutiny. Between MTV Canada’s announcer’s antics (for those, see here) and his half-hearted retraction and flimsy apology and fan reactions to Kristen’s participation in a pre-DVD release party video (see here), she probably doesn’t need another insult to add to injury.

Though she’ll be making millions for New Moon, perhaps the scrutiny could be turned down just a bit. • Read full story…
